A Look Back at Niki Fisher’s Triumph at the 50km RockShox Golden Triangle Epic

On September 20th, Niki Fisher took out the Open Female 50km event at the 2009 Australian Marathon Championships in Bendigo.  Bouncing back from illness in winning style, Niki has shown that hard work in the gym, powered by ASCEND, and dedication on the training track definitely pay off!

Niki Fisher’s RockShox Epic 50km Race Report

The ROCKSHOX 2009 Epic has been a feature on the calendar since 2006, and has been steadily growing in reputation since, with some great singletrack, challenging climbs and sweeping descents.

I rocked up to the 2009 race a bit unsure of what to expect having had some forced time from my hectic training schedule due to sickness. Despite this, I felt good as we lined up on the start line. The gun went and we were away.

The girls I was racing against seemed to be setting a pretty solid pace and after a while I started to feel like they were going a good deal stronger than me. I was forced to back off hoping I’d be able to make some ground back in the technical sections.

Luckily for me I was right and once we hit the first major section of singletrack I bridged back across to the front girls and I was in the lead. It didn’t last long though as I soon found myself off the track and wondering where I was. I backtracked to find myself behind the leaders once more and had to put in a big effort to get back across.

It was a tight battle between myself and the girl I was racing against (Lisa) which also made it a really fun race. In the end I managed to pip her for the last section of singletrack and pedal home for victory.

The trails at Bendigo were a real blast and the tough competition made it a really challenging but rewarding day.

I’m also feeling the benefits of my months of gym with ASCEND Muscle, Recovery and Protein Catalyst. Using the Muscle in conjunction with the Protein Catalyst has helped me to build muscle where I need it and the Recovery has helped me bounce back from tough sessions quicker, thanks ASCEND.
